Concrete Backyard in Philadelphia

Turn a muddy, cracked yard into a backyard you'll actually use.

What a Concrete Backyard Is

A concrete backyard is a solid, finished surface for the space behind your home. It can be a full slab, a patio for the grill and table, a path to the garage or alley, or a mix of all three. Dependable Concrete has served Philadelphia since 1984. We build backyards that are easy to clean, easy to walk on and ready for cookouts, kids and quiet mornings. If you want a dedicated seating area, see our Concrete Patio page.

Signs It's Time

  • Grass that turns to mud every time it rains
  • Old concrete that's cracked, sunken or crumbling
  • Uneven spots that trip guests or make chairs wobble
  • Water that pools near your back wall instead of draining away
  • Weeds pushing up through cracks and broken slabs
  • A yard you avoid instead of enjoying

If any of that sounds familiar, a new concrete backyard can fix it.

How We Approach the Job

We start by walking the yard with you. We look at how water moves, where you walk and how you want to use the space. We'll tell you plainly what the yard needs and what it doesn't. Then we clear the old surface, prep the ground so it's firm and level, and shape the slab so rain runs away from your house. We put down a gravel base and pack it tight with a compactor. We offer exposed aggregate, and we add dye to darken the concrete so it doesn't dry to a bright white. We pour 4000 PSI concrete with fiber mesh mixed in for strength, then smooth and finish the surface and give it time to set. You can walk on it the next day. How long the whole job takes depends on the size of the yard.

We can also tie your backyard into a new Concrete Walkway, back Concrete Steps or a Concrete Driveway so everything matches.

Doing the Whole Back of the House at Once

Many homeowners tackle everything together. A new slab, fresh steps down from the kitchen door and a clean path to the alley make the space feel finished. Doing it together also means one crew, one plan and one point of contact.

Built for Philadelphia Backyards

Philly yards are their own thing. Many older rowhomes and twins in Germantown and Roxborough have tight, narrow lots with alley access. Stone houses in Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy often have slopes, old walls and mature trees. Shared fences and tight property lines are common too, so we measure carefully and keep neighbors in mind. We plan around all of it, including how we get materials in and out without wrecking your property.

Our winters are tough on concrete. Water seeps into small cracks, freezes, expands and breaks the surface apart over time. That's why prep and drainage matter so much. A concrete backyard in Philadelphia needs to shed water and stand up to freezing nights followed by mild days, season after season.

Some projects may need a city permit. When one is needed, we pull it for you.

FAQs

Q: How long before I can use my new backyard?

A: Concrete needs time to set before it's ready for foot traffic and furniture. We'll tell you exactly when it's safe to walk on and when to bring out the table and chairs.

Q: Can you replace my old cracked concrete?

A: Yes. We break out worn, cracked concrete and pour a new surface. If the old slab is still solid, ask whether resurfacing makes more sense.

Q: Can my backyard have color or a custom look?

A: Yes. We offer exposed aggregate, and we add dye to darken the concrete so it doesn't dry bright white.

Q: Do you work in my neighborhood?

A: We serve all of Philadelphia, especially Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Germantown and Roxborough.
