Concrete Steps in Philadelphia

Cracked, crumbling steps? We rebuild them safe, solid and sharp.

What We Do

Your front steps are the first thing people see and the first thing they touch. Dependable Concrete builds new concrete steps, repairs worn ones and replaces steps that can't be saved. Vince and the crew have poured and fixed concrete steps in Philadelphia since 1984. We build for homeowners who want steps that feel solid underfoot and look right on the block.

We also build bull-nosed steps. These have the classic rounded front edge you see on so many older Philly homes. The rounded edge softens each step and fits right in with the neighborhood. Every set of steps gets a traction finish, so the surface gives good grip in rain and snow.

Signs It's Time

  • Cracks that keep getting wider
  • Chipped, flaking or crumbling concrete on the edges or treads
  • Steps that tilt, rock or have pulled away from the house
  • Uneven step heights that make people trip
  • Railings set in broken concrete

When we rebuild your steps, we reset your existing railings or install new ones, whichever you prefer.

Maybe you step around a bad spot, or you warn guests to watch their footing. Either way, your steps need attention. Small cracks are easier to fix early, before water gets in and makes them worse.

Built for Philadelphia Homes and Winters

Philly winters are hard on concrete. Water seeps into small cracks, freezes, expands and thaws, over and over. Each cycle pushes the crack a little wider. That's why a quick patch often doesn't hold. Good concrete steps in Philadelphia have to stand up to that, so we look at what's causing the damage before we fix it.

Our neighborhoods add their own twist. In Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Germantown and Roxborough, we work on older rowhomes, twins and stone houses. On those homes, the steps should match the house's character, not fight it. We fit new work to the home you have.

Share Steps With a Neighbor?

Many twins and rowhomes share one set of front steps. When one side wants new steps and the other doesn't, it can feel like you're stuck. We can split shared steps so each side gets its own. Your neighbor doesn't have to take part. If they aren't interested, we cut along the party line and redo only your side, so your half is new and theirs is left as it is. We take care of the permit for you.

How We Approach the Job

We start by looking at your steps in person. Then we tell you plainly what we see and whether a repair will do or the steps need replacing.

When we replace steps, we follow these basic stages:

  1. We break out the old concrete.
  2. We prepare a firm base.
  3. We set the forms, which are the wooden frames that shape each step.
  4. We pour fresh concrete.

We pour strong 4000 PSI concrete with fiber mesh mixed right in, which helps it hold up to Philly winters. Most step jobs take about 2 days.

After the pour, we finish the surface, let it cure and clean up before we leave. You get the work you asked for, done right.

Pair It With the Rest of Your Front

Steps rarely stand alone. Many homeowners update the path to the door with a new concrete walkway at the same time. Some clean up the street edge with a concrete curb or redo the concrete driveway. Out back, a concrete patio gives you a place to relax.
