What a Concrete Walkway Does for Your Home
A walkway is the path from your sidewalk or driveway to your front door, side door or backyard. It's the first thing guests step on and the last thing you walk at night. When it's solid and level, nobody thinks about it. When it cracks, sinks or crumbles, it becomes a trip hazard and drags down the look of the whole house. Need a new concrete walkway in Philadelphia? Dependable Concrete has built and replaced them for homeowners across the city since 1984. Vince and the crew show up when we say we will, and we will return your call.
Signs You Need a New Walkway
- Cracks wide enough to catch a toe or a heel
- Slabs that have sunk, tilted or lifted so the edges don't line up
- Chipped, flaking or crumbling surface
- Puddles that sit on the path after rain
- Weeds or grass pushing up through the cracks
- A path that looks tired next to the rest of your home
If you see even one of these, it's time for a look. A small problem today usually grows after one more winter.
How We Build It
Before work starts, we walk the site with you, talk through the layout and answer your questions. Then we tear out the old, broken walkway and haul it away. Next, we prepare the ground underneath, because a walkway is only as good as what it sits on. We put down a gravel base and pack it tight with a compactor, because a firm, level base helps the new concrete stay put. We set forms to shape the path, pour the concrete and finish the surface so it looks clean but isn't slick underfoot. We give it a slight slope so rain runs off instead of pooling. Our walkways are poured 4 inches thick. We offer exposed aggregate, and we add dye to darken the concrete so it doesn't dry to a bright white. We pour 4000 PSI concrete with fiber mesh mixed in for strength. When the job is done, we clean up the work area.
Built for Philadelphia Homes and Winters
Philly winters are hard on concrete. Water soaks into small cracks, freezes, expands and pushes those cracks wider. After a few seasons of freezing and thawing, a walkway can break apart. Getting the base and drainage right from the start helps your new path hold up season after season.
We know the homes here, too. Many older rowhomes, twins and stone houses in Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Germantown and Roxborough have narrow side paths, tight front yards and walkways that tie into old steps. We shape each concrete walkway in Philadelphia to fit the space and suit the character of the house and the block.
Pair It With Related Work
A new walkway can make nearby concrete look worn. Many homeowners fix it all at once: front concrete steps leading to the door, a backyard concrete patio, the concrete driveway your path connects to, or clean concrete curbs to finish the edges.
